Urticaria (Hives): Causes, Symptoms & Homeopathic Treatment

By Dr. Anisha · 18 July 2026

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin reaction that causes raised, itchy welts (wheals) to appear suddenly on the skin. In more pronounced reactions, it can progress to angioedema — swelling of the deeper skin layers, often around the eyes, lips, and face.

Causes

  • Allergens — certain foods, medications, insect bites, or contact with irritants
  • Infections — viral or bacterial infections can trigger an urticarial reaction
  • Physical triggers — heat, cold, pressure, or sun exposure in some individuals
  • Stress — emotional stress is a well-recognized trigger and aggravating factor
  • Idiopathic causes — in many cases, especially chronic urticaria, no single trigger is ever identified

Symptoms

  • Raised, red or skin-colored welts that can appear anywhere on the body
  • Intense itching
  • Welts that may change shape, move, or disappear and reappear elsewhere within hours
  • In more severe reactions, swelling of the lips, eyelids, face, or throat (angioedema)
  • Symptoms lasting under 6 weeks are classified as acute urticaria; beyond that, it’s considered chronic

When to Seek Immediate Care

If swelling affects the throat or breathing becomes difficult, this is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention — this goes beyond what homeopathic treatment alone should address.

Homeopathic Approach

For uncomplicated urticaria, homeopathic treatment looks at the pattern of the reaction — what it looks like, what relieves or worsens it, and what seems to trigger it — to match an individualized remedy. Commonly indicated remedies include:

  • Apis mellifica — for hives with stinging, burning pain and swelling that is better with cold applications
  • Urtica urens — a classic remedy for hives with intense itching and burning, especially after eating shellfish
  • Natrum muriaticum — for hives that appear after emotional stress or grief
  • Rhus toxicodendron — for itchy, restless skin eruptions that are better with warmth
  • Astacus fluviatilis — specifically indicated for urticaria-type eruptions

A Real Case

We treated a patient with acute urticaria causing significant facial and lip swelling. Homeopathic treatment resolved the swelling and reaction entirely, with no recurrence. See the before-and-after photos →

This article is for general information only. Facial or throat swelling with breathing difficulty is a medical emergency — seek immediate care rather than waiting for any treatment to take effect.
