Hypothyroidism: Causes, Symptoms & Homeopathic Treatment
By Dr. Anisha · 12 February 2026
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body’s needs. Since thyroid hormone regulates metabolism, even a mild deficiency can affect energy, weight, mood, and long-term heart and bone health.
Causes
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis — an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, the most common cause in adults
- Iodine deficiency or excess — iodine is essential for hormone production
- Postpartum thyroiditis — temporary or, in some cases, permanent thyroid dysfunction after childbirth
- Family history — a genetic predisposition to thyroid disorders
- Stress and lifestyle factors — chronic stress, poor sleep, and nutritional deficiencies can all affect thyroid function over time
Symptoms
- Persistent fatigue and low energy
- Unexplained weight gain despite no change in diet
- Cold intolerance
- Dry skin and hair thinning or hair fall
- Constipation
- Low mood, brain fog, or difficulty concentrating
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Puffiness around the face and eyes
Diagnosis
Hypothyroidism is confirmed through blood tests measuring TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), along with T3 and T4 levels. A raised TSH alongside low or borderline T3/T4 typically indicates an underactive thyroid.
Homeopathic Approach
Classical homeopathy treats hypothyroidism by looking at the whole person — energy levels, temperament, digestion, and the specific pattern of symptoms — rather than prescribing a single fixed remedy for “thyroid problems.” Commonly indicated remedies include:
- Calcarea carbonica — for fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and a chilly, sluggish constitution
- Lycopodium clavatum — for digestive complaints alongside thyroid symptoms, and low self-confidence
- Natrum muriaticum — where thyroid symptoms follow grief or emotional strain
- Thyroidinum — sometimes used as a supportive remedy in an individualized prescription
- Graphites — for dry skin, weight gain, and constipation alongside thyroid dysfunction
- Sepia officinalis — for exhaustion, low mood, and hormonal irregularities, especially in women
Treatment is monitored through regular follow-ups and repeat thyroid function tests, with the remedy and potency adjusted as the case progresses.
A Real Case
We recently supported a patient through an 8-year struggle with hypothyroidism. Within 3 months of individualized homeopathic treatment, her TSH levels normalized and she was able to discontinue her daily thyroid medication, alongside a reduction in weight. See her before-and-after lab reports →
