High Cholesterol: Causes, Risks & Homeopathic Treatment

By Dr. Anisha · 10 June 2026

Cholesterol is a fatty substance the body needs to build cells and produce hormones — but when levels of LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides rise too high, or HDL (“good” cholesterol) runs too low, the risk of heart disease and stroke increases significantly over time.

Understanding the Numbers

A standard lipid profile measures:

  • Total cholesterol — ideally under 200 mg/dL
  • LDL cholesterol — the main driver of arterial plaque buildup; ideally under 100 mg/dL
  • HDL cholesterol — helps clear cholesterol from the bloodstream; higher is better, ideally above 50 mg/dL
  • Triglycerides — another blood fat linked to diet and metabolic health; ideally under 150 mg/dL

Causes

  • Diet — high intake of saturated fat, trans fat, and refined sugar
  • Sedentary lifestyle — low physical activity lowers HDL and raises LDL and triglycerides
  • Genetics — familial hypercholesterolemia and other inherited patterns
  • Underlying conditions — hypothyroidism, diabetes, and kidney disease can all raise cholesterol
  • Age and hormonal changes — cholesterol tends to rise with age, particularly after menopause
  • Stress and poor sleep — increasingly recognized contributors to an unfavorable lipid profile

Symptoms

High cholesterol itself typically causes no symptoms — it’s identified through routine blood tests, which is why periodic screening matters even when you feel well. Left unmanaged over years, it silently increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Homeopathic Approach

Homeopathic treatment for high cholesterol takes into account diet, lifestyle, stress levels, and any underlying conditions such as thyroid dysfunction, alongside the individual’s overall constitution. Commonly indicated remedies include:

  • Allium sativum — supportive for cardiovascular and metabolic health
  • Baryta muriatica — for high blood pressure and cholesterol in older patients, especially with arterial changes
  • Cholesterinum — used specifically to support healthy cholesterol metabolism
  • Fucus vesiculosus — often indicated where weight gain and sluggish metabolism accompany raised cholesterol
  • Crataegus oxyacantha — a heart tonic used to support cardiovascular function

Homeopathic treatment works best alongside — not instead of — sensible dietary changes, regular exercise, and monitoring through periodic lipid panels.

A Real Case

One of our patients saw a significant improvement in her lipid profile through homeopathic treatment — total cholesterol down from 276 to 128 mg/dL and LDL from 159.3 to 56.2 mg/dL, alongside better overall well-being. See her before-and-after lab reports →

This article is for general information only. Individual results vary, and cholesterol management should always be monitored with regular blood tests and, where prescribed, alongside conventional medication rather than in place of it.
